On February 7, 2009, 150 people were stranded on lake Erie. This happened after a change in the weather that brought warm weather and high winds. The warm weather caused the ice to crack and break away, stranding fisherman and others on the ice. This insident will end up costing the tax payers a fortune becuase the people were rescued by helicopters, and coast guard boats.

This article is significant to me because i was surprised that people would still risk their lives to go out onto the ice after warm temperatures melted some of it making it unsafe.

1. why do you think these people decided to go onto the ice that they knew wasn't safe?
2. Do you think its fair that the tax payers have to pay for the rescue of the hundred people?

  1. well there a few reasons, one, they are suicidal, or two they did not that that THIS could happen. The fisherman need to make money. If they dident know or care about the conditions, then this S*(^T can happen, but then again they need to make money.
Is it fair, mhmm... is it right yes. 100 people are now worthless because they had a laps in judgment. or did they have a laps in judgment because they needed to work. See chapter 7 ( working while sick) in the book Waiter Rant

  2. I think while perhaps it was stupid of the people to not check the reports prior to going out on the ice, at the same time, I believe that yes, we should pay for their rescue. I mean, things like that can happen by accident, and in such a case, you'd definitely want people who could respond.

  3. I absolutely do not believe that it should be our responsibility for their rescue. Our tax dollars go up because some ignorant and lazy people decided not to fully research the conditions for that day and what conditions they should be doing that activity in. If anything, they should pay for their own rescue. It was their idea in the first place, so they should get the repercussions of their stupid move.

  4. I don't understand why the tax payers should have to pay to rescue people that were careless enough not to check the reports and even look at the ice before they went on it. I can see rescuing the one or two people that get stuck on the ice but 150 people!!!!!!! Not even one person noticed the crack, and no one was even thought about what the rising temperatures do to ice.

  5. I just think the entire thing is ridiculous. They should have known better to begin with. People are just so stupid sometimes and we don't realize until we have to go rescue them from doing whatever stupid thing they did. I can understand helping poor little animals out of the ice but people I mean come on..

  6. I agree with Brian that we should pay for them to be rescued. It would be more of a problem if we didn't. There would be law suits, media coverage, and a serious Public Relations problem for the government if they aren't even willing to rescue their own people. It's hypocritical to say that we don't have the funds to rescue people in America when we are spending billions of dollars trying to stabilize other countries. Yes they should have checked reports and known better but that is the reason we have a coast guard and police and rescue teams. They are there for when idiots decide to do something stupid and make mistakes. If no one ever made a mistake we wouldn't need these services. Furthermore if it was me I would want to get rescued rather than be told that my life is not "financially fair to tax payers".
