Adam Stone" News of the Day ( HORRAY FOR NOT WORKING BLOG)Links:http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=Internet&articleId=9126479&taxonomyId=167&pageNumber=1http://www.mercurynews.com/politics/ci_11521008Summery:
The Supreme court shot down a bill that would impose restrictions on porn sites. However the bill was declined becuase the way the bill said that they should go about this would limit the common persons right to view porn. Thus violating the first amendment
3: This is significant because if the language is better defend a bad bill can get pushed through into law
4. Can a society make laws with a religious bias?
4. Should morality have any place in law-making

  1. Society should not be able to make laws based on a religion. It wouldn't be right to not allow people to be in the porn industry. For one: people are making money and if you take away the porn industry more people would be employed. Just because some people frown upon porn it doesn't mean everyone else does. It should be limited to people under the age of 18 because their brains are not fully developed and don't know how to process everything they see and hear. People have the right to free speech if it isn't hurting or offending anyone than leave it be. If it is offending people they don't need to go on those websites, and or read the magazines. Even if the bill gets passed people will still find ways to watch porn. Remember the prohibition?

  2. Although it may not always seem this way, there is supposed to be a separation of church and state. In this sense, religion should not have influence over laws. Morality, however, has some of the same common beliefs as religion, but is a more legit way to influence laws. Porn, however, is something that can be taken away by a law. Like Ethan said, people will find a way to watch it even if it becomes illegal.

  3. In the case of morals about laws, aren't laws just a reflection of a society's morals? I mean killing people is illegal because it's considered morally wrong. If we didn't have a moral or ethical issue with killing people there would not be a law against it. Ethics and morals are our laws. And the idea of a separation of church and state is a nice ideal but it's unrealistic. We can stand on the principal but in reality church and government are very intertwined. The fact that America has never had a non- christian president is a testament to that. Furthermore, most church- goers learn their morals in church. This is where god tells you what is right and wrong as the ultimate parent figure. And if we learn our morals from this parent figure and laws are a reflection of our morals it's impossible to fully separate church and state. Every society has a religious bias, it's just a question of which religion. For example in india cows are sacred because of the religion. In America, that same idea still applies, it's just not considered as "ridiculous" by us because we live in it everyday.
